SYMPOSIUM ON CREDIT REPORTING IN CAMBODIA
Phnom Penh – A first of its kind symposium was held May 3rd, 2019 in the Grand Ballroom of the Phnom Penh Hotel, jointly by the International Finance Corporation(IFC) and Credit Bureau Cambodia (CBC) which saw the attendance of numerous dignitaries, prominent members of Cambodia’s business community and stakeholders, both domestic and international.
After welcoming and opening remarks by Sokim Mel, Senior Financial Sector Specialist, EAP, IFC and H.E. Chea Serey, Director General of National Bank of Cambodia and Chairwoman, Credit Bureau Cambodia, respectively, Mr. Hung Hoang Ngovandan, Lead Financial Sector Specialist, EAP, IFC took to the podium to talk about “Commercial Credit Reporting: What It Is and What It Implies for Lenders?”. Next the audience was treated to a presentation on the “Commercial Credit Reporting System in Cambodia: A New Service for Business Lenders” by Mr. Sothearoath Oeur, CEO, Credit Bureau Cambodia. After a short break, the eloquent and insightful Mr. Jinchang Lai, Lead Financial Sector Specialist, and Lead for Financial Infrastructure, EAP, IFC took to the stage to make sense of the “Impact Study on Credit Reporting: Concepts and Some Comparisons with Another Economy”, which featured a comparison between China and the Kingdom of Cambodia. Following Mr. Jinchang Lai’s presentation, Mr. Neil Munroe, Director, CRS Insights Ltd., UK, gave the audience a brief that praised both the NBG and CBC, as well as further elucidated the research findings and offered recommendations for the future entitled “ Key Findings and Recommendations from the Impact Study on Credit Reporting in Cambodia”. The symposium concluded with a panel discussion regarding “The Future of Credit Reporting in Cambodia – Innovating for Digital Economy and Digital Finance” in which the main points discussed were the central aggregation of data under CBC and the utilization of new tools and algorithms to possibly assist in creating a more clearer and comprehensive picture of the economic landscape in Cambodia. The discussion was moderated by Ms. Heng Thida, Head of Retail Banking, CIMB Bank, and included the following panelists:
