On Monday, June 3, 2024, Mr. Casey Barnett, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (AmCham), met with H.E. Heng Sour, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, to discuss enhancing Cambodia’s workforce productivity to attract more US investment.

Welcoming attendees, AmCham President, Casey Barnett, stressed the chamber’s commitment to promoting free and fair competition and support the Cambodian government in this endeavor. He shared a key finding from a recent research paper published by the United States National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), based on 18 years of management and company data, that identified the top structural reforms a country can undergo to most effectively enhance productivity and sustainable growth.

At a comprehensive discussion organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (AmCham) and supported by Tilleke Gibbins at Raffles Hotel, experts from various sectors convened to address the complexities and operational challenges of the recently enacted Competition Law in Cambodia. This law applies to both natural and legal persons engaged in activities that might hinder competition within the Cambodian market, regardless of whether these activities are conducted within or outside the country’s borders.

Delivering the keynote address at a discussion forum on ‘Competition Law: How to Avoid Activities That Prevent, Restrict or Distort Competition,’ organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (AmCham) at Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh, Oun said that the law that came into effect in 2021 is an effective tool to prevent unfair competition.

At a recent event by the AmCham ICT Committee in Phnom Penh, the discussion centered on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to advance education. Christopher McCarthy, Chair of the AmCham ICT Committee and CEO of MangoTango, pointed out the dire state of education, with less than 3% of 15-year-old high-school reaching expected skill levels in key subjects. He advocated for AI as a tool to significantly enhance learning outcomes, traditionally the domain of costly private tutoring.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (AmCham) has successfully concluded its Annual General Meeting and Charity Gala Dinner on March 27, 2024, at the Oakwood Premier Phnom Penh hotel. This event was not only a celebration of the chamber’s achievements but also a pivotal moment for its future, as it announced the election of five new governors to its Board of Governors for the 2024-2026 term.
